Thermachoice III is a third-generation technique for endometrial ablation. Endometrial ablation is the removal or destruction of the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium), performed as an alternative to hysterectomy for many women with heavy uterine bleeding who wish to avoid major surgery.

Developed by Dr. Goldrath in 1979 using a hysteroscope and a YAG LASER. This was followed by hysteroscopic endometrial ablation using a resectoscope with cautery to remove the uterine lining.

Second-generation endometrial ablations include the use of techniques that destroy the lining through freezing, electrical energy, or thermal energy. Dr. Taylor has been performing endometrial ablation since 1988.

Still, these are commonly performed in the outpatient surgery department of the hospital or in ambulatory surgical centers, and patients are put under general anesthesia.

The third-generation Thermachoice III Balloon can be performed as an outpatient procedure and can be done under local anesthetic in about 30 minutes, and requires no incision. Recovery is fast—many women return to their normal activities the next day.

Following treatment with Thermachoice III, most women can expect light to moderate periods or the total elimination of periods.

Thermachoice III is effective. 95% of women who had the procedure are still happy with their results after three years.

This is how the procedure is done, step by step:

1. First, a soft, flexible balloon (made of a silicone material, which eliminates the risk of allergy for latex-sensitive women) attached to a thin catheter (tube) is inserted into the vagina, through the cervix, and placed gently into the uterus. No incision is required. Then, the balloon is inflated with a sterile fluid that expands the balloon to fit the size and shape of the uterus.

2. The fluid in the balloon is heated and circulated for 8 minutes while the uterine lining is treated.

3. When the treatment cycle is completed, all the fluid is withdrawn from the balloon, and the catheter is removed. Nothing remains in the uterus. The uterine lining has been treated and will slough off, or shed, like a period.
